while the absence of lance armstrong may mean that i am not as emotionally wrapped up in this year's tour de france - the competition, the ups and downs of the various riders has made this no less thrilling....
after a lackluster day yesterday, floyd landis, "the pedalin' mennonite" (bob roll) pulls back into 3rd - 30 seconds behind... i am pulling for landis (hey, no one complained about national chauvinism in the world cup, so don't gripe about me cheering for an american - besides, he's an interesting, likeable fellow, from what i've read) - but really, ultimately, i don't care too strongly who wins, just, pardon the pun, enjoying the ride...

i've been wondering lately why i blog...for me the reason has always been to give me an additional opportunity to connect with people - which i think has happened in the past but doesn't seem to happen now....i enjoy sharing my photos, but there are other ways to do it...
perhaps it's the same reason zombies in DAWN OF THE DEAD headed for the shopping mall - "they do what they know..."
what does this all mean. i don't know... wouldn't it stink to have all these wonderful communication tools only to find that you have nothing to say!

jewel staite posing with her grandfather, um, me...
more photos from my toronto trip, including, yes, more jewel, to come...
ok, call me a geek...
but we were in town partly for my wife to see her fave sci-fi actor, from her favorite show (michael shanks - stargate) , and lo-and-behold, *my* favorite sci-fi actor, from my favorite show, was there as well...jewel staite from firefly/serenity...
so risking being labelled a geek for life (as though, i wasn't already) i bought a day ticket just to hear her speak and it was worth it. she's a charmer...on firefly/serenity, she is perhaps the cutest ship engineer in sci-fi history (beating out scotty, geordie laforge and chewbacca). no wonder, she has such geek appeal....
greetings from toronto. i changed the wallpaper of the computer in the hotel's business center to be the post card from gina and my show!
hmmm...anyone know about vandalism laws in canada

*warning* this is a gross entry - proceed at your own risk...
one sentient being not having a happy fourth is a rabbit parts of which we found this AM on our family room carpet. it wasn't there when i went to bed - although, i did have the screen open last night taking photos of the spectacular storm (nature's fireworks). but i'd have seen this. we found a window out - perhaps because of the storm - or perhaps due to a bloodthirsty cat - that we feel allowed one of our cats (we have a suspect) to get in and out to perpetrate this most heinous crime. my wife has a stronger stomach than me, so she did the entrail/severed limb duty (gee, i thought rabbit feet were good luck) - enumerating the find/taking inventory (hmmm, a foot, only 2 toes - where are the rest?. we could make a keychain honey!. - look an ear) - while i cowered in the fetal position in the corner, wretching....i'm glad the kids didn't find the crime scene...
guess, all my vegetarian propoganda is not having an impact...i feel like reporting my cat to peta, but i'm not sure what they'd do, given that he, in fact, is an animal as well...
i think i may need to move...

nacho libre - funny, in a fairly low key way
jpod - douglas coupland - witty cultural observations - dare i say more fun than usual
touch the sound - interesting, lovely film that shook my definition of deafness
company - max barry - very good book, a tad shy of his previous work - though i am still reading it
heart of gold - good, but not earthshattering neil young concert flick
richard thompson 1000 years of popular music - just got it yest and am dipping into t now - early favorite - his version of oops i did it again - most likely worthy its own entry
sarah silverman - jesus is magic - i like sarah silverman, and i don't have an issue with humor that is a bit rough - but i couldn't take it - didn't finish it - i mean, i get it, a beautiful woman using bad words...somehow, i expected more...
hoodwinked - very funny....
anat fort at the cornelia stree cafe (live in nyc) - didn't know what to expect - she was an accompanist for my bros. vocal class - her trio blew me away - apparently, she has an upcoming record on ecm... great intimate venue...
meerkat manor - expected a cute little animal show - got the meerkat version of the sopranos. of course, you know how i like the sopranos - and they are cute, when not launching vicious attacks on their own children or rival families - again, kinda like the sopranos
free diver - tanya street - outstanding, beautiful documentary - wish there was more tv like this
oln's coverage of the tour de france - the perfect summer AM viewing, for a number of reasons - again, worth its own post - for starters, best sports announcers on earth: phil ligget, paul shermen and force de nature, bob roll...
maybe there's more - will have to think...
toronto this weekend for me (when did i start talking like yoda)
so, what's on yer cultural radar?
