Nigerian Letter scammer convinced to carve replica Commodore 64

Cory Doctorow:The 419Eater website chronicles the incredible story of a guy who baits "Nigerian Letter" scammers by telling them he has no time to help them free their dead relatives' seized assets because he is so busy sending out $150,000 scholarships for talented carvings to display in his galleries. He actually convinces a 419 scammer to produce a detailed replica of a Commodore 64 computer with the lure of a big cash payout -- then blows him off with a twist ending worthy of The Big Con. reminds me of the guy i knew that claimed to be a vegetarian not because he loved animals, but because he hated plants...

pain, blues and agony

my back hurts. if anyone cares. people ask me "what did you do?"

i have no clue. got old. didn't die.

some people say "you're as old as you feel" the last few days, that's precisely what i am afraid of.

awesome show...

discovered an awesome new show thanks to my friend's kid...
wonder pets.

my own kids are too old for it, but somehow, paradoxically i am not and love it. seriously. mix of animation and animated photos. a duck, turtle and hamster save an animal in distress each episode in an operatic manner. each episode has the same format, same tunes, lyrics adapted to the specific dilemma...

i think for kids the sameness is comforting. for me, the sameness reinforces the archetypal nature of the story lines...someone once said, there are only two stories: a stranger comes to town and a hero makes a quest...this is decidedly in the 'a hero takes a quest" camp - but the heroes are cute fuzzy animals and the quest involves saving another cute animal. each story concludes with an ode to teamwork...

no, i have not cracked up - great stuff...

peripatetic mike

this past weekend, i went to see richard thompson at stuart's opera house in nelsonville, ohio. (a big up to david, thrhough whose blog i found out about the show). it was one of the best concerts i've ever attended. thompson is a great songwriter, singer and last, but certainly not least, guitarist - with a large and impressive body of work going back to the 60's. stuart's opera house is a great venue - close to ohio u, it had a very progressive, college town feel - out in the middle of the country. the drive down was beautiful - wish i wasn't driving so i could have snapped some photos of the flora and fauna...given there were no hotel rooms cause of ou's graduation - i camped out. i'm not a very experienced camper - but it went fine - was a bit chilly....

no photos were allowed in the concert, which at first bugged me, but ultimately, it might have been good as it allowed me to focus on the music...however, in order to provide complete coverage of the show, in the tradition of the court artist, here is an artist's rendering of the show...
drawing of richard thompson

the opening act, natalia zukerman, was very good as well - an unenviable task - opening for such a strong performer - and she shined...you should check her out...i think i passed her in the hall before the concert, but i did not recognize her - she said hi when we made eye contact

all in all, a great concert...

one downside - a cousin of mine passed away - i was able to stop by on the way home from nelsonville for her funeral...

later in the evening, after i got home, some friends stopped by - we had a nice fire going and a great time...

all in all a busy, but good weekend...

in other news, i am going to nyc in 2 weeks for my bros birthday...

favorite poem

Eternity

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sun rise.
- Blake

saw richard thompson friday. one of the best concerts ever. will post more later

adventure

a recent post on david's outstanding music blog pointed me to an article about recent fave richard thompson, which made me realize he will be playing this friday in southern ohio - about 3.5 hrs away - i decided, what the heck, and i'm going to go...it is sold out (only 350 seats) - but they are putting up some folding chairs and heck, i'm not proud...

one slight problem. it is commencement at nearby ohio university, so there are no hotels in the immediate vicinity...

so, my options seem to be:
a. drive back that night...
b. park bench and newspapers
c. a campground
d. find a hotel in columbus...

gee, anyone from nelsonville reading this?
i'll keep you posted - if anyone cares...

heavy rotation

LIVE, LOVE, LARF & LOAF by french, frith, kaiser and thompson - a very recently discovered gem - twisted in all the right ways...

in other news...
normally, walks in the woods calm me - yesterday though in the wetlands, the woods seemed - sinister - lots of strange animal noises - bullfrogs, birds - if not malicious, at the very least misanthropic - saw a snake slither... i think maybe cause there were storms nearby - maybe it freaked the animals out... all the time i'm thinking, that i am sure the chances of being attacked by a grizzly in ohio are small, this would have been the day for it - and i don't want to be the topic of a werner herzog documentary.... did get some great heron photos...will post later....
